Endurance & Running: What the Research Says
Running is one of the most studied forms of exercise in sports science, and the data keeps landing in the same place: it's cheap, effective, and tied to some of the largest longevity gains of any single habit. Here's the current evidence on why running works, what it costs your joints, and how to protect against that cost.
The Longevity Numbers
The foundational study here followed 55,137 adults aged 18 to 100 over 15 years and found runners had a 30% lower risk of death from any cause and a 45% lower risk of death from heart disease or stroke compared with non-runners — and the benefit held regardless of how fast or how far people ran.[1] More recent work backs this up from a different angle: a 46-year follow-up study found that higher cardiorespiratory fitness in midlife was one of the strongest predictors of long-term survival, with each 1 mL/kg/min increase in VO2max linked to a 3.7% reduction in all-cause mortality.[2]
Why Endurance Work Might Beat Power Sports for Lifespan
Recent 2025 analysis comparing exercise types found endurance-based activities like running appear to confer greater longevity benefits than power-based sports such as weightlifting or boxing, with intensity playing a more critical role in reducing cardiovascular mortality than total training volume.[3] That's not an argument against strength training — the two are complementary — but it does make the case that running deserves a permanent spot in a well-rounded routine, not just an occasional cardio day.
The Injury Question: What Actually Protects Your Joints
The biggest barrier to consistent running isn't motivation, it's injury. Footwear research has increasingly focused on this. A large randomized controlled trial following runners over six months found that greater midsole cushioning was associated with a meaningfully lower risk of running-related injury, an effect that held even after accounting for body mass.[4] Newer research on advanced running shoe technology has found that modern cushioning and plate designs measurably reduce the biomechanical loading patterns associated with common running injuries like shin splints and stress fractures.[5] The research is still refining exactly how much cushioning is optimal, but the direction is consistent: shoes built for the specific demands of running measurably change your injury risk, not just your comfort.
The Runner's High Is Real
Beyond the physical numbers, running has a well-documented mood effect. Sustained cardio raises endocannabinoid levels in the blood, and because those molecules cross easily into the brain, they produce a short-term lift in mood and reduction in anxiety — the biological basis of the "runner's high."[6] A 2024 study measuring mood before and after a 60-minute outdoor run confirmed the effect directly, and found it was strongest in people who ran regularly, not occasional runners.[7]
