Strength Training: The Research-Backed Case for Lifting
Strength training used to be framed as vanity work — something you did for the mirror, not for your health. The research doesn't back that framing anymore. Resistance training is now one of the most consistently evidence-backed interventions in sports science, tied to stronger bones, better metabolic health, and measurably slower biological aging. Here's what the latest studies actually show, and the gear we've built our strength range around.
Stronger Bones, Fewer Fractures
Bone loses density with age whether you train or not — but resistance training is one of the few interventions shown to slow or partially reverse it. A 2025 systematic review and network meta-analysis of high-intensity resistance protocols in older adults found moderate-to-high-load training produced meaningful gains in bone mineral density, with heavier loads performed consistently over time producing the strongest effect.[1] A related meta-analysis focused on postmenopausal women — a group at particularly high fracture risk — found even low-load, high-repetition resistance work meaningfully slowed bone loss at the lumbar spine and femur.[2]
A Longer, Healthier Life
Strength training's benefits go beyond bone and muscle. Researchers analyzing telomeres — the protective caps on DNA strands that shorten with age — in nearly 5,000 adults aged 20 to 69 found that people who strength trained regularly showed markers consistent with biological aging slowed by close to four years compared with non-lifters.[3] Muscle and bone health are closely linked, and preserving both is one of the clearest paths to staying mobile and independent later in life.
Better Blood Sugar Control
Resistance training also does real metabolic work. A 2025 review of exercise interventions in older adults found resistance training improved glucose metabolism through a distinct mechanism from cardio — building muscle mass increases the amount of tissue available to absorb and store glucose, which directly improves insulin sensitivity.[4] In people with type 2 diabetes specifically, a large meta-analysis found resistance training improved insulin sensitivity, reduced intermuscular fat, and lowered systemic inflammation — benefits that held up over the long term and, in some measures, outlasted the effects of aerobic training alone.[5]
The Mental Health Case
The psychological research is just as strong. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found resistance training meaningfully reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms across age groups, with the largest effects in people already managing a diagnosed mental health condition.[6] Earlier meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials found similar antidepressant effects from structured resistance programs.[7] There's a psychological mechanism at work beyond the physiology: progressively adding weight to the bar is one of the most direct, visible forms of evidence that you're capable of more than you were last week.
